Celebrating UNESCO's 'World Day for Audiovisual Heritage'

Introduction

Cantonese opera film is a genre unique to Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province, China, a confluence of two art forms. Love in a Dangerous City is the only available opera movie featuring a female lead played by a man. The HKFA print is the film's only surviving copy. To prevent further damage to the print, it had not been shown since 1987, when it was screened in the Cantonese opera film retrospective of the 11th Hong Kong International Film Festival. Over thirty years later, thanks to digitisation technology, Chan's masterful artistry can once again be shared with the world.
