20-Year Flashback

Located in Sai Wan Ho on Hong Kong Island, the Hong Kong Film Archive opened to the public on 3 January 2001. At the same time, the world's first bilingual Chinese and English film database search system came online. With the purpose of preserving Hong Kong's cinematic culture, the Hong Kong Film Archive has collected over one million film artefacts locally and overseas since the establishment of its Planning Office in 1993. We share this wealth of cultural resources in Hong Kong film with film lovers and researchers through professional conservation, restoration and organisation of the collection, together with diligent research, publication and activities such as exhibits, screenings, guided tours, seminars, symposiums and by collaborating with educational and cultural institutions on themed events. In recent years, digital technology has progressed rapidly, greatly impacting and transforming film restoration and artefact preservation techniques. As we enter our 20th year, the Archive is ready to accept more and greater challenges to keep with the times, and work tirelessly to conserve and promote cinematic culture.
