Hong Kong Film Search

In order to make information of Hong Kong films readily available for searchers anytime, anywhere, the Archive has developed a Hong Kong Film Search system. Users can search according to specific criteria, such as film title, name of film personalities or film's release year, for a preliminary list of the desired information.

The Hong Kong Film Search system is based on the ‘Hong Kong Filmography (1914-2010)' compiled by the Archive. Alongside several newly added   search options, the system has recently expanded its reach to basic information on Hong Kong films up to the year of 2022. Contents of the system are built upon a wide range of information and data. Major reference sources include our archival collections, the Hong Kong Filmography Series, the Hong Kong Film Awards website, the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association website, local print media and more. We welcome advice on any possible errors or omissions in our database. Please email us at hkfaweb@lcsd.gov.hk.

Cantonese opera has always been closely related to Hong Kong cinema, and Cantonese opera film was one of the major genres in the 1950s and 1960s.* For reference purpose, we have put together a listing titled Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Films of the 1950s and 1960s. It includes Cantonese opera films with drum and gong music–a distinct feature of Chinese opera–as well as period costume sing-song films without this feature. The listing excludes Cantonese contemporary sing-song films, despite a few exceptions.

* Only four Cantonese opera films have been produced in Hong Kong since the end of the 1960s, namely Laugh in the Sleeve (1975), Princess Chang Ping (1976), The Legend of Purple Hairpin (1977) and The Legend of Lee Heung Kwan (1990).

Biographies of filmmakers are one of the most important keys to understanding and researching their times and works. The ‘biographical notes' chapter is, therefore, a staple in many topical volumes published by the Archive over the years. To make searching easier, biographical notes contained in our previous publications are updated and made available online. Both local and overseas filmmakers who had worked in Hong Kong, including producers, directors, screenwriters, actors, cinematographers and editors are covered.
