Morning Matinee - Dynamic Duos: Neck and Neck

Morning Matinee - Dynamic Duos: Neck and Neck

Introduction

Instead of fanfare and lion dance, four pairs of iconic martial arts duos will help celebrate the re-opening of the Cinema at the Film Archive with 18 action-packed movies. Action cinema is a major genre elevating Hong Kong films to global fame. Kwan Tak-hing and Sek Kin headlined the early Hong Kong kung fu films in the 1950s with authentic and traditional martial arts moves; Kenneth Tsang Kong and Suet Nei launched a new style of Cantonese wuxia films in the 1960s with the duo fighting their way from period to modern films; featured prominently in Chang Cheh's cinematic world of chivalry and honour are Ti Lung and John Chiang during the 1970s; the genre segued into Hong Kong action comedies in the 1980s with brothers-in-arms Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao as flag-bearers. These 18 classic films collectively form an amazing cinematic journey of action films and their transformations throughout the years.
