The Deformed (1960)
Betty Loh Ti as Leng Shuxian

A beautiful lady marries a deformed man for the sake of her family, and is deeply moved by his kindness and love.

In the film, Betty Loh Ti at times wears qipaos, and at other times Western garments, implying the changes in emotions of the role when she has to choose between family duty and her own happiness. Betty Loh Ti wore this costume again in Malayan Affair (1960).

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

The fabric of this qipao features multi-coloured stripes against a black ground. The most eye-catching stripe is strategically placed at the centre front. The bust darts and waist darts, collar and sleeves allow the stripes to follow the body curves. This precision of the stripe placements is effective in building the gentle and decent quality of the character.
