Tony Leung Ka-fai goes to absurd lengths to tide his needy friends over, so much so that his wife (Carina Lau Kar-ling) has to toil to make ends meet and his son (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) can't study medicine as he wishes. By some strange quirk, an accident pulls the resentful son back in time to the days his father was young. There, he gets to know how his elders and betters used to stand by each other, through weal and through woe, helping the father and son clear the air at last. A beautiful homage by director Peter Chan Ho-sun to In the Face of Demolition (1953), whose "all for one and one for all" motto best encapsulates the moral values held dear in 1950s and 60s Hong Kong.
