Revisiting the history of Hong Kong during Japanese occupation in the Second World War, Our Time Will Come begins with the legendary rescue of Chinese intellectuals by the Dongjiang guerrillas, an underground resistance group. Director Ann Hui approaches this wartime drama with a subdued tone and little bombasts, following schoolteacher Zhou Xun, her lover Wallace Huo and her mother Deanie Yip into their daily struggle for justice and humanity. Intelligence exchanges are disguised as daily actions with ordinary people going about their normal lives in tumultuous environment. Calm on the surface but shares the momentum of a thriller, the film slowly unfolds each character's life. For Zhou, the war reinspires her on literature, and redefines her priorities for her lover, mother and fellow fighters. Ann Hui's signature humanistic sensibility and female subjectivity set the film as a special example for Chinese anti-Japanese war drama, crowning Hui again with Best Picture and Best Director awards.
