The on-screen feud between Kwan Tak-hing and Sek Kin was not limited to the Wong Fei-hung film series. Kwan was inspired by Westerns early on and trained hard to be a virtuoso at whips as seen in the 1936 production of ‘The Knight of the Whip'. The plot of this remake was markedly different with Kwan playing a kung fu master and kind-hearted doctor in ancient times. When Kwan fought for water supplies on behalf of the villagers, he was injured and imprisoned by the tyrannical lord of the Village Manor. The final showdown with Sek was set in a moving water wheel, making the fight choreography ever more spectacular.
