Before there was Ip Man (2008), the wing chun hero depicted in kung-fu films was mostly Leung Jan, the character played by Yuen Biao in The Prodigal Son. Various wing chun skills including long bridge, short bridge, and the stance are showcased in the scenes in which Leung apprentice under wing chun master Leung Yee-tai. Spectacular action sequences and a fully developed plot made this film the most memorable wing chun movie that preceded Ip Man. Yuen, already a certifiable star by that time, continued to have an excellent rapport with Sammo Hung, demonstrating perfect comic timing in the two's fight scenes.
