Dangerous Encounter - 1st Kind
Dir: Tsui Hark |

Brutal... Sadistic... Nihilistic... Angry... Alienated… Dangerous Encounter – 1st Kind is a film that demands description in striking terms. The third feature by New Wave mainstay Tsui Hark is a severe indictment of modern civilisation, finding malice in every turn of humanity, from the soul of individuals to human collectives like families and societies to the globalisation that was already taking shape in 1980. The story of school kids who witness their youthful shenanigans spiral out of control is powered by an absurdist realism, packing a powerfully unsettling punch. The film was so disturbing it was in fact banned by the colonial government, not released until drastic changes were made by a reluctant Tsui.
