Clara Law's first feature-length film developed with lifelong collaborator, Eddie Fong, is a lively and nuanced profile of a city of flow and migration a deca de prior to the watershed moment in its history. Themes of romance and politics are intertwined with a light touch; the seeds of suspicion planted by long distance marriages and ambivalence over the handover of sovereignty are flecked with enough bitterly comic touches that are a far cry from the dark, gritty undertones of its First Wave predecessors. Writer-director Kam Kwok-leung stars opposite award-winning actress Tanny Tien as better halves of two long-distance couples, destined for the greatest irony of falling in love with the right person at the wrong time and wrong place.
