Divorce is a much-neglected topic in Hong Kong films and Cream Soda & Milk easily stands as one of our cinema's best attempts to examine the issue. But it's also a lot more. The film tracks the fortunes and misfortunes of a family after the parents go their separate ways, ambitiously taking on a wide-ranging host of social issues, from changing family values to gender politics to youth culture to class divisions to education philosophy. Mapping the divergent lives of the couple's two children, director Rachel Zen and scriptwriter Chen Fang not only present a vivid portrait of Hong Kong in the early 1980s but also offer a provocative inquiry into how the conflicting forces of nature and nurture affect child development.
