Cantonese opera has always been closely related to Hong Kong cinema, and Cantonese opera film was one of the major genres in the 1950s and 1960s.* For reference purpose, we have put together a listing titled Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Films of the 1950s and 1960s. It includes Cantonese opera films with drum and gong music–a distinct feature of Chinese opera–as well as period costume sing-song films without this feature. The listing excludes Cantonese contemporary sing-song films, despite a few exceptions.
Biographies of filmmakers are one of the most important keys to understanding and researching their times and works. The ‘biographical notes' chapter is, therefore, a staple in many topical volumes published by the Archive over the years. To make searching easier, biographical notes contained in our previous publications are updated and made available online. Both local and overseas filmmakers who had worked in Hong Kong, including producers, directors, screenwriters, actors, cinematographers and editors are covered.
