Between the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Hong Kong comics entered its golden age, as a number of best-selling comic series were launched, attracting the eye of filmmakers and producers seeking new material for the big screen. The Stormriders (1998), riding the wave of significant advancements in CGI in the late 1990s, featured an all-star cast that helped bring to life the characters of Wind and Cloud from the wuxia comic Storm Riders. A great box office and critical hit, The Stormriders was a milestone in CGI and special effects technology in Hong Kong cinema. This seminar will be hosted by Thomas Shin, with Ma Wing-shing, the creator of Storm Riders, as well as the film's screenwriter-cum-producer Manfred Wong, and presenter-cum-executive producer John Chu in attendance. To introduce audiences to the transformative journey from a Hong Kong comic book classic to an onscreen fantasy epic, the conversation will dive into the creative process behind Ma's comic, how it was adapted into a screenplay, and how CGI effects were deployed to capture the comic-book magic on film.

Free admission. Conducted in Cantonese.
