Introduction

Since 2005, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated 27 October as 'World Day for Audiovisual Heritage' to acknowledge the importance of audiovisual heritage to regional culture, and to enhance the public knowledge of the preservation of audiovisual heritage. On October 27, this year, the Hong Kong Film Archive will present another treasure from its collection, Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom (1959).

Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom is one of the masterpieces in the Archive's flagship programme ‘100 Must-see Hong Kong Movies', it has been newly digital-restored to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Inscription of Cantonese Opera onto Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The restored version will premiere at the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 4 September and be screened again at the cinema of the Archive on the ‘World Day for Audiovisual Heritage', to deepen the public awareness of the preservation of audio-visual heritage and allow more audiences to appreciate this classic treasure.
