Movie Talk: Alex Cheung

Movie Talk: Alex Cheung

Introduction

In focus for the 2019 instalment of the ‘Movie Talk' series is Alex Cheung, one of the pioneers of the Hong Kong New Wave who definitely wears more than one hat: a director, screenwriter, cinematographer as well as special effects and stop motion animation director. Through three films of his own and two masterworks of his choice, Cheung hopes to share with the audience the creative force behind his works all through the years.

Some people say that character determines your fate, but Cheung says that film shapes his character. Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up (1966) opened Cheung's eyes and made him realise that truth and falsehood are just properties of beliefs and totally dependent on people's acceptance. Coming from a modest background, the young Cheung learnt from life that dreaming was a luxury. But the protagonist of Man of La Mancha (1972) taught him ‘to dream the impossible dream, to reach the unreachable star!'. And it is his pursuit of the cinematic dream that Cheung wishes to pass onto his young audience.
