Encountering the Idol… Again!

Encountering the Idol… Again!

Introduction

For the past 28 years, early autumn has been a time to reminisce about Yam Kim-fai, our eternal idol.

The Hong Kong Film Archive has so far held three series of commemorative screenings for the anniversaries of Yam's passing and her centenary, so that her fans can gather and revisit the superstar's glory days. This year, to celebrate the 15th edition of Cantonese Opera Day, the Archive is again screening three films featuring Yam alongside three distinct screen partners.

Thanks to the advancement of film restoration technology, Tenth Madam To Sinks Her Treasure Chest in Anger (1956) – starring Yam, Pak Suet-sin and Sun Ma Si-tsang - can finally return to the silver screen. Also premiering at the Archive is Law Shing At the Gate (1962) in DCP format at 2K resolution for fans to revisit Yam and action heroine Yu Lai-zhen's iconic showdown. Last, but not least, we will be showing The Unroyal Prince (1960), Yam's first on-screen pairing with her talented disciple Connie Chan Po-chu.
