The White Snake
Director: Li TaoCast: Zhang Huoding, Song Xiaochuan, Xu Chang, Chen Zhenzhi
2006 | Colour | DCP | Mandarin | Chi Subtitles | 121min | Beijing Opera
The integration of the abstract and the concrete has always been a major issue for opera films, and this one is a wise attempt. Its pared-down aesthetics shows fully the beauty of Chinese opera, such as the simulated movements of the actors on an imaginary boat. The interior of White Snake's home is even experimental, tearing the traditional theatre rulebook which emphasizes contrast and juxtaposition. While trying to innovate, the director pays due respect to the art, such as close-up of footwork of the different role types and slow-motion shots of major stunts. Zhang Huoding is now regarded as the best dan actress of the Cheng school; her co-star Song Xiaochuan, who plays Xu Xian, also cross-dresses as the White Snake in other occasions, a measure indeed of the boundless creativity in Chinese opera.
