Center Stage (1992)
Maggie Cheung as Ruan Lingyu

Behind the glorious life, a legendary star is vulnerable, sensitive and suppressed.

Maggie Cheung trained hard for ten days to recreate the movements of women in qipao in the Republican Era. For her superb interpretation of the role, she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. She once said, ‘I wear a costume, not because it makes me beautiful, but makes me believe I am her’.

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

At the time, the director and art direction team spent much time in Shanghai doing research; it is believed they found antique qipaos of the 1930s for Hong Kong tailors to study and use as reference. The slip used inside this qipao is no longer around. Art Director indicated that in the 1930s, brassieres were not worn, qipaos had a more two-dimensional look. The fabric for qipao needs to be soft and drapey, and a heavy silk slip worn under the qipao will provide support, building a slim and flowing silhouette.
