Beauty in the Maelstrom (1956)
Linda Lin Dai as Shi Lifang

In the Chinese version of Gone with the Wind set in the Warlord Era, this Scarlett is still beautiful and wilful, and cares nothing for her three marriages.

Linda Lin Dai was at the prime of her beauty, and did an amazing job portraying the spoiled, obstinate personality of the character.

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

The only feature found on this qipao that resembles the fashion of the Warlord Era is the pair of flared sleeves, but the original style has a much wider opening. The high stand collar and body-hugging style belong to the 1950s. The most interesting element is the choice of a lively print of circles, which is definitely not a style in the early Republican period.

Costume Designer: No information

Note: There is no audio-visual record of this costume. Yet, the related record card from Shaw’s costume storage department and the collar label on the costume prove it is made for Linda Lin Dai in Beauty in the Maelstrom.
