Red Rose (1952)
Li Lihua as Red Rose

During the Warlords Era, a songstress suffering from feudal oppression finally fights back in an ultimate battle.

Gorgeous in both period and contemporary costumes, Li Lihua gives the period qipaos a breath of freshness.

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

The paired vest is an adaptation of a style from the early Republican Era. Though the vest is embellished in the traditional way with the Ruyi motif (a traditional Chinese auspicious symbol in cloud shape), the bodice is made from an Indian jacquard fabric with paisley designs. This cropped vest with added bust darts creates a high-waisted look. The qipao is trimmed with layers of edging, a technique which should not have existed during that historical period, more a type of craft belonging to the 1950s.
