Malayan Affair (1960)
Betty Loh Ti as Feng Shuying

The Malaysian Anna Karenina has married a wealthy businessman to help her own family. When she meets her first love again, and her heart begins to waver.

The qipao suit was designed by Betty Loh Ti herself, who once said ‘no one would understand you more than yourself’. It exudes the demureness and gentleness of a young elegant woman.

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

This qipao is made from a textured cotton cloth nicknamed ‘bark cloth’, a fashionable everyday fabric at the time. This bright blue fabric is machine-embroidered with florals in thick threads of light blue and white. The pattern is well suited for the South Asian tropical scenery where the movie was shot on location. By the late 1950s, qipaos were often paired with a matching jacket made from the same fabric.
