Madame Slender Plum (1967)
Jenny Hu as Wang Lilian

A spoiled headstrong girl infatuated with a playboy becomes a nightclub songstress.

Since two big screen beauties Jenny Hu and Diana Chang Chung-wen starred in the film, Shaw Brothers spent over ten thousand dollars to have more than ten glamorous costumes made for each star.

An extra wore the same qipao for a nightclub girl role in My Name Ain’t Suzie (1985).

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

In the 1960s, silk satin was taken over by more economical mixed-fiber satin, with a wide selection of new fashion colours. Manually operated embroidery machines appeared, speedily producing less costly embroidered effects. By using metallic threads combined with some extra work, three-dimensional florals could be produced.
