Star of Hong Kong
1962 (Japan), 1963 (Hong Kong)
Lucilla You Min as Wang Xinglian

An overseas medical student in Japan, wearing qipao to emphasise modern and traditional beauty of Chinese women.

The Japanese film brochure describes Lucilla You Min as ‘a fashionable film star who designs almost all her own outfits’, and qipao is like her ‘trademark’.

Characteristics of the Qipao Costume

Elegant in its simplicity, this qipao is minimally trimmed on the sides with vintage embroideries that were patched together. These trims with Ruyi design (a traditional Chinese auspicious symbol in cloud shape) are placed strategically to provide different visual effects from different points of view.

Costume Designer: Ashida Jun

Notes: Since the Japanese film brochure states Lucilla You Min brought 30 costumes with her to Japan for the shoot, the qipao costumes featured in the film were not likely to be designed by Ashida Jun.
