An Autumn's Tale (4K Restored Version)

An Autumn’s Tale is the second instalment of award-winning director-screenwriter duo Mabel Cheung and Alex Law’s ‘Migration Trilogy’. The story begins with young Jennifer (Cherie Chung) flying alone to New York to study in the hope of joining her boyfriend Vincent (Danny Chan) who is attending university there. Little does she know that Vincent has already moved on to another girl. Broken-hearted and stranded in New York with not much money in her pocket, Jennifer has little option but to turn to her only distant relative Samuel (Chow Yun-fat), who looks a bit rough around the edges, for help. Seemingly with nothing in common, the two lonely souls gradually form an unlikely friendship and before anyone realises, their friendship slowly evolves into love. Director Mable Cheung and screenwriter Alex Law both studied literature at the university and the plot twist in the bittersweet gift exchange scene is tenderly reminiscent of O. Henry’s early 20th century short story ‘The Gift of the Magi’. This classic romance movie swept three awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The critically acclaimed film was also such a big commercial success at home and abroad that a Thai version was later made with a similar storyline. A Very Romantic Story in the Very Big City released in 1989 was so well-received by the local audience that it was again remade as a Thai television drama in 1995.
