A romantic comedy among two guys and a girl, in the hands of Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai, becomes a maze of twists and turns, a cutthroat, him-or-him choosing game. Kevin (Daniel Wu), an architect down on his luck, is inspired by Yen (Gao Yuanyuan), a young woman originally from Suzhou, China. The frank and direct Kevin, with the help of a tree frog, regains his fighting spirit. The financial world’s golden boy Sean (Louis Koo) often flirts with Yen from the building across the way. By nature, he can’t help but be amorous. He becomes Yen’s boss, and is humorous and charming. One is a 100% good guy with ideals, abilities and a loving heart, but is unbearably boring; the other is a 100% ass, romantic and humorous and rich, but cannot remain faithful to his love. Wai Ka-fai sets up these two extreme scenarios, which not only fills the situation comedy with absurdity but actually simultaneously tells two stories, from the respective viewpoints of a man and a woman. From Yen’s viewpoint, her story questions the true meaning of love: does a woman want love to be safe and steady? Or unforgettable? From the two guys’ points of view, what do they dream about? A beautiful, loving object of desire? Or a muse or soul mate? In this most colloquial of topics, Wai Ka-fai performs a hat-trick: showing a battle between ideal and reality on many levels and from many angles, turning it into a philosophical discussion on the certainty of fate.
