Storm Riders, a creation of Hong Kong's famous comic book artist Ma Wing-shing, as well as a classic signature work of Ma's Jonesky Limited, features uniquely multi-dimensional character development, emphasis on visual elements, a structure that is film-like and tension-filled, techniques on creating scenic excitement as good as or even better than Chinese Hero and details and subtleties in the artwork to challenge any display in an art gallery. Elements such as the relationship between Wind and Cloud, the destiny of the heroes, the love and hatred between master and pupils in the story made the prediction of ‘your success and undoing will all depend on Wind and Cloud' relatable and meaningful on so many levels that the epic comic books became the talk of the town.

Wong Jing, Manfred Wong and Andrew Lau's BoB & Partners Company Limited, flush from the success of their film series ‘Young and Dangerous', challenged themselves with the technically difficult The Stormriders. They pared down the script to its bare minimum, focusing on the duel between Wind, Cloud and Lord Conqueror. With Ekin Cheng playing Wind, Aaron Kwok as Cloud and Japanese film star Sonny Chiba as Lord Conqueror, the actors perfectly matched their characters. Director Andrew Lau and Centro Digital Pictures worked together on computer special effects to create many unique and fantastic visuals. Two scenes in particular that blended computer special effects with human acting are still considered amazing today: Wind battling the Flame Kylin and the fight between Lord Conqueror and Wind and Cloud at Sword Grave. The Stormriders raised the bar of the comic book film genre with computer technology, laying the crucial foundation for Hong Kong's special effects films.
