Alfonso Wong started drawing comics while working a full-time job for church publications. His Old Master Q comic series appeared in newspapers and magazines in the 1960s, including Hong Kong Daily News founded by media tycoon Law Bun. It became a standalone serial publication in 1964, and the story of this absent-minded old man upholding morality was met with great success. With an astute business sense, Law Bun, who was also a co-founder of the Hong Kong Film Company, decided to make a film adaptation of this hugely popular comics in 1965. In this very first adaptation, which was followed by so many others, Ko Lo-chuen's lanky physique resembles exactly Old Master Q's, and his acting further enhances such resemblance. Ngai Tung Kwa plays Old Master Q's friend Big Potato, a hilarious character in almost the same attire as Old Master Q but whose physical features are exactly the opposite. New actor and actress Cheung Ching and Suet Nei play a financially struggling couple, and Old Master Q, as their good friend, wants to help but only to mess things up. Directed by Chan Lit-bun, the film also sees the guest appearances of Connie Chan Po-chu, Nancy Sit Kar-yin and Kenneth Tsang Kong as rebellious youngsters which are rather unusual for these popular icons.
