After seasoned music producer Sam (Leslie Cheung) successfully brought his girlfriend Rose (Carina Lau Ka-ling) to stardom, he ambitiously coaches his almost talentless male protégé Wing (Anita Yuen) to be the next big star. Mutual affection is soon developed between the two, without Sam knowing Wing is actually a woman.

This gender-bending rom-com is one of the early titles under United Filmmakers Organisation—a breeding ground for new directors and screenwriters, and a breath of fresh air in the film industry. Written with the Cantopop icon in mind, the story is set against the dazzling world of showbiz, centering around a successful man whose world starts to crumble as he struggles with his sexuality. The film cleverly plays on sexual ambivalence and gender confusion as it explores the taboo topic of homosexuality in 1990s Hong Kong. On top of his terrific acting, Cheung—who had stepped down from the music scene—also surprised audience with his on-screen performance of the film's theme song, which won the Best Original Song prize at the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards.
