Anita Mui transforms into Yoshiko Kawashima, the last princess of Manchuria who becomes a cross-dressing spy in this historical epic—a big-budget production with filming locations spanned across Beijing, Tianjin, Japan, Macau and Changchun, the former capital of the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo.

Mui was at the peak of her career when she took this significant acting role, and she had once shared in an interview that this film was one of her favourite works. Mui fully embodies the famous historical figure's complexity and androgyny with her striking screen presence and chameleonic performance. Not only does she capture the layers and transitions of the princess spy, but she also seamlessly traverses through masculinity and femininity in between the espionage and torrid love affairs, making it one of her most memorable and highly acclaimed performances on screen.
