It is a rare occasion when Leslie Cheung plays a crafty, cunning rascal. In this city comedy, Cheung plays a dodgy scoundrel who scams from the elderly, betrays his friends, takes advantage of naïve women, sells bootleg goods and cheats in mahjong. Long and Winding Road, directed by Gordon Chan and co-written by Chan and Chan Hing-kai, skillfully mines the possibilities of the 'little man comedies' genre, drawing laughter from the antics of the ordinary folks trying to make a life for themselves in the urban jungle. Playing a salesman of the sweet-talking kind, walking the metropolitan beat in sly artfulness, Cheung captures the character with aplomb, imbuing him with a humanity that draws sympathy.
