Back in the days when people didn't ride the subway with smart phones in their hands, the fast-running train could be where they found long-lasting love. Behind the Yellow Line is a 1984 rom-com set on the busy railway, marking the first on-screen collaboration between Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, alongside newly crowned pageant queen Maggie Cheung. The appearance of Cantonese film veterans Yip Ha-lei, Cheang Mang-ha, Chan Lap-bun and Chin Tsi-ang opposite these young rising stars was undoubtedly a passing-the-torch moment in the history of Hong Kong cinema.

When Paul (Leslie Cheung) locks eyes with a beautiful stranger named Monica (Maggie Cheung) at the MTR station—he falls in love, she hesitates. A love triangle ensues when Anita (Anita Mui), a rich heiress, feels attracted to Paul when she encounters him on the same subway cart. It's a cruel game that fate plays with love, and it will take a little help from Cupid to give this modern fairy tale a happy ending. The many love themes featured in the film, including the duet title song performed by Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung, still remain pop classics today. Mui demonstrated her versatility as a performer and earned her first Best Supporting Actress honour at the 4th Hong Kong Film Awards.
