Jay Chou, along with co-stars Edison Chen and Shawn Yue, forms a trio of bona fide teen idols making the film irresistible to their fan base. The copyright holder of the Japanese manga originally requested 29 amendments. As the film's producer and experienced in both negotiations and filmmaking, Chong negotiated with the Japanese alone and was able to overturn all amendments except a slight change on one line of dialogue. With Chong's contributions, Initial D becomes a Hong Kong classic among adaptation films.
