In wuxia and kungfu films, weapons and their users often go hand in hand. In Iron Monkey, Wong Fei-hung is taught to master the eight-diagram pole but his weapon of choice is a gentleman's umbrella. The film entails an intriguing story of Wong's father Wong Kei-ying and the chivalrous Iron Monkey joining forces to face off against Shaolin Temple rebels. Two scenes designed by Yuen Woo-ping fully manipulates the dual function of an umbrella as a weapon and a shield. Yuen also choreographs incredible manoeuvrings for actor Yu Rongguang to show off the agility and versatility of the nine-section whip.
