Many kungfu films revolve around a Chinese protagonist defeating a Japanese master, but none serves up a more stunning display of matching weapons than Heroes of the East. Instead of dwelling on conventional nationalistic sentiments, the narrative focuses on a Chinese man's argument with his Japanese wife about which culture is superior when it comes to martial arts. When the wife invites a group of Japanese martial artists over, it sets off a series of spectacular combats featuring a fascinating range of similar weapons, from tonfa swords and spears to the three-sectioned staff and nunchaku to butterfly sabres and ninja sai. Coupled with adrenaline-pumping scenes of weapon-snatching, they attest to Lau Kar-leung's meticulous action choreography which will surely take your breath away.
