A swordsman Li has his weapon, the Green Destiny Sword, delivered for safekeeping but the sword is stolen by Jen, the daughter of a rich family, who just want to prove her martial art skills. But later the Green Destiny Sword turns into an obsession and becomes the tool for her self-affirmation. The script is based on a wuxia novel written decades ago in the 1940s, but the portrayal of Jen still resonates today in the pursuit of independence. Ang Lee's masterful directing and complimented by Yuen Woo-ping's magnificent martial arts choreography won this film the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001.
