There is a myth that sharp weapons may bring their owners bad luck. Qiwu Sword was forged with hatred, making it dark and evil, and a danger to the lives of whoever owns it. Its owner tries to avert ill fortune by living in seclusion for years, however many in the martial world continue to seek him out to battle for the famous sword. The lead character Li (Adam Cheng) is also caught up in an evil conspiracy because of it. The film is faithful to its original novel by Wong Ying in style, but maverick director Patrick Tam takes bold directing decisions in the mise-en-scene and the finale where the foe is cut in half is testament to Tam's groundbreaking creativity in editing.
