Weapons and characters not only go hand in hand but also complement each other. The black sabre wielded by Fu, the protagonist in The Magic Blade, is the perfect case in point. This film adaptation of Gu Long's novel follows the anti-hero in his combat against the arch villain Yu by force and by brains. Gu Long describes Fu's blade simply as "a jet-black sabre", a subtle metaphor for Fu's composed but valiant character. Director Chor Yuen and martial arts choreographer Tong Kai create imaginatively a half-tonfa-half-épée blade for Fu, which can be wielded horizontally. The swordplay, the tricks and traps all serve to deliver a unique platter of visual effects, giving this custom-made weapon a filmic highlight to remember for posterity.
