Once Upon a Time in China II

It may not have the dazzle of a sleek sharp sword or hold the terror of a flying guillotine, but it sure has the longest history. Featured prominently in kungfu and wuxia films, the staff can become a powerful and versatile weapon in the hands of a true master. In Once Upon a Time in China II, Jet Li and Donnie Yen put on a mesmerising showcase of long staff fighting styles, from spins and slams to thrusts and undercuts. Their final showdown, which transpires inside narrow alleyways and amidst bamboo scaffolding, see the duelling duo interacting creatively with the surroundings and dishing out an eye-opening mix of whip and flail techniques. To this day, the film remains a testament to the exquisitely detailed approach of action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping and the kinetic imagination of director Tsui Hark.
