Struggle has a special place in history. It's the only surviving film of Unique (Shanghai), the very first film company of the Shaw family empire. It's also one of the first sound films of China, made after the eldest of the Shaw brothers Runje Shaw recognized the importance of talkies and started importing equipment and technology from America in 1931. Struggle, the only survived film of famed director Qiu Qixiang, is the tale of two young lovers' struggle to fight against the persecution of a powerful land baron. A rare deviation from the Unique (Shanghai)'s usual profit orientation, it instead assumes the stance of left-wing progressives in a story critical of capitalism and supportive of the War of Resistance.
