Adapted from the Russian novel Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, the title character becomes a woman suffering under a patriarchal society instead of having a forbidden affair out of desire. Bearing similarities to The Woman Between, the film also features Ma Si-tsang as the husband and Cheung Wood-yau as the former lover, with the married wife being Pak Yin instead. With Pak Yin having a different screen persona from Hung Sin Nui, the on-screen chemistry in the love triangle is quite different. In a brilliant casting against type, Ma is far from gentle and portrays a controlling husband chasing after fame and fortune. His mere glances and tone of voice are intimidating and perfectly epitomise patriarchy, a total departure from Ma's typical comedic roles.
