The Soong Sisters is a rare historical epic that shines the light on figures seemingly peripheral but actually very important. The titled women are married to three men pivotal to the development of modern Chinese history and director Mabel Cheung gives them their rightful due with a telling at once delicate and nuanced, offering an alternative view on a crucial page of our past. The film's making took five long years, its story traversing Beijing, Shanghai, Northwest China, Japan and the Soviet Union, in a shooting schedule of over three months. Shanghai, where the sisters are born and raised, remains the locale of emotional fulcrum, upon which the closeness between them and their relationships with the husbands are sprung. The Soong sisters may have different ideological beliefs but they share an appreciation for exquisite qipao, each one they wear an animation of their respective personalities and states of mind.
