Opera superstar Sun Ma Si-tsang is a close friend of Luk Wan-fung and appears frequently in films produced by Luk's company. Here, Sun Ma goes against type to play a painter, competing for the heart of a girl against a fellow artist, a musician (Law Kim-long). Much drama and comedy are squeezed from the love triangle, which is set against a backdrop of affluence, a condition usually depicted with disapproval, if not outright disdain, in Cantonese cinema. One high point of the film─heavily promoted by Luk in the advertising campaign─is a frolicking spectacle at the beach, where Sun Ma puts on display his never photographed pencil-thin physique! Playing against the dueling artists is opera diva Pak Suet-sin, who is given ample opportunities to exert her individuality, not to mention parading in the chicest of fashions, her style and the confidence it projects embodying the chutzpah of the new woman emerging out of mid-20th century Hong Kong.
