This is one of two films produced by Luk Wan-fung's film company, established shortly after he moved to Hong Kong from Guangzhou, in the first year of its establishment. The story of a husband forced to leave town to make his living, leaving behind his family to endure hardship, is highly melodramatic. Yet, directed by Wu Pang of kung-fu films fame, Homeward Bound! is marked by well-observed social details and emotional resonance, realized by the performances of leads Cheung Ying and Fong Yim-fun and their supporting cast. Especially impressive is Cheng Bik-ying, playing a character who has to endure profound suffering late in the game, taking the film to its affecting conclusion.
