Yu Lai-zhen, an operatic female lead in martial role, had her film debut in Cuckoo's Soul in March, an adaptation of the Cantonese opera written by popular playwright Lee Siu-wan for Lung Fung Opera Troupe. The film is a modern version of the play, depicting the tragedy of a girl, Pak To-kuen (Yu), who is separated from her father during the war. Fortunately she is taken in by her childhood friend Fan Ching-wah (Ng Cho-fan) and they soon develop feelings for each other. However the two are again separated by war and while Pak is reunited with her father, she is forced to marry a rich man Hung-fu (Mak Bing-wing)...Lost for years with only the first half rediscovered, the film preciously captures Yu's early yet moving performance on screen as a gentle soul, radically different from her usual bold martial role on stage.
