This is an adaptation of a serial novel by scriptwriter Yu Kei-ping (deemed soft-core by some!). The film dials down the depiction of desire and longing. Instead, it deepens the original's critique of the system of concubinage. In order to support her sick mother, waitress Cho-fen (Pak Yin) marries a rich businessman as a concubine. Material wealth, however, guarantees comfort but not happiness. Cho-fen finds herself caught in a whirlwind of nasty conflicts and petty disputes. Centred on the issues raised by concubinage, the film exposes how the system embodies an outdated idea of male privilege. With Cho-fen joining a woman's association at the end, Never Too Late to Meet hints at the possibility of female autonomy and empowerment.
