Besides on-stage performers, opera talents behind the curtain also joined the film industry. Director Mak Siu-ha was a veteran scriptwriter, composer and scholar of Cantonese opera. He participated in more than 20 films but this film is his only extant work and last work before being killed in air raids in 1941. Four wooers, oblivious to the imminent subjugation by Japan, compete for the affection of Lady Perfume (Cheang Mang-ha). The lady, on the other hand, is determined to raise funds for the war effort. She stages her opera show Peach Blossom Fan for the cause, even willing to sell her own marriage. The film pokes fun at people's indifference during wartime through the play-within-a-play which coincidentally preserves an invaluable scene in which Cheang, a Peking opera actress by training, performs sword dancing.
