Wong Chi-keung (Lee Ching) joins a group of villagers to organise a guerrilla resistance group after his father has been killed. With assistance from anti-war Japanese soldiers, they finally succeed in eliminating the invaders. Director Situ Huimin takes a humanistic stance towards the war in this film and transcends the ‘us vs. foe‘ duality seen in most national defence films. He describes in detail the Japanese soldiers' hatred towards the war and its afflictions for ordinary Japanese civvy. The film's reflective approach was rare considering the circumstances and social atmosphere of the time. Upon its completion in 1938, however, the authorities demanded cuts of over two thousand feet of film (approximately over 20 minutes). Under a new title, the edited version was finally released three years later.
