In a rare role departing from the prototype of virtuous woman, Pak Yin plays a young woman hailing from an educated family in A Poor Lover's Tears who falls for the wrong man and is nearly sold to a brothel after eloping to Shanghai. She ceases to believe in love after moving to Hong Kong. Hiding her true self, she has her suitors in the palm of her hand. Mong Wan engaged in serious literary works initially and switched to entertaining fictions later on, gaining popularity with his vivid and captivating characters. Adapted from his popular pre-war novel, the film depicts an unrestrained and materialistic female character seeking pleasure in the cosmopolitan of Hong Kong at the time, but completely free of moral judgment.
