Yi Hung-sang started his writing career in the 1930s but found true popularity after the war. He participated in film production as screenwriter and director using his real name Yu Kei-ping, and many of his serials were adapted into films. The Crazy Matchmaker was adapted from his serialised novel published in the newspaper Sing Pao. The popular and steamy novel features wanton relationships between men and women fueled by lust and deception; it also exposes the dark side of society and loss of moral direction in post-war Hong Kong. Director Lo Duen preserved the racy elements of the novel and took on the role of a swindler himself. The swindler seduces three women and uses them to steal money from other men. Tsi Lo Lin acts as a pure and innocent maid while Chan Yeuk-ho plays a loose woman, but both characters end up being victims of oppression in a patriarchal society.
